About this Issue

Capes #1 (September 2003) is the debut issue of Robert Kirkman and Mark Englert's corporate superhero satire set within the Invincible Universe, marking the first appearances of Bolt, Commander Capitalism, Kid Thor, Claire Voyant, and the Capes, Inc. organization — a privately run, profit-motivated superhero agency that became a recurring presence in the broader Invincible continuity. The issue's punch-clock-heroes premise, presenting costumed crime-fighters as salaried employees navigating paperwork and overtime, offered a wry counterpoint to traditional superhero idealism and anticipated many of the genre-deflating ideas that would gain wider popularity in subsequent years. Beyond its own characters, the issue carries a historically significant bonus: a five-page preview of The Walking Dead #1, published the same month, constituting the earliest print preview of that series and its cast. The three-issue miniseries was eventually folded deeper into Kirkman's shared universe as a backup feature in Invincible, cementing Capes, Inc. as a durable corner of that world.

History

Writer Robert Kirkman launched Capes as a companion piece to Invincible, which was already gaining traction at Image in 2003; he paired with artist Mark Englert, whose earlier work on a Savage Dragon backup had drawn positive notice from readers and critics. The series was planned and executed as a three-issue miniseries from the outset, with Kirkman using the Capes, Inc. concept — superheroes as employees of a government-funded, then privately operated corporation founded in the 1960s by Big Brain and the Meteor Twins — to explore workplace comedy within a superhero framework. Following the miniseries, Kirkman expanded the Capes characters into backup stories beginning in Invincible #27–31 and continuing through additional issues; those backups were later collected alongside the original three issues into a trade paperback released in 2007. In 2025, Kirkman and Englert returned to the property with a remastered version featuring substantially redrawn art and revised dialogue, followed by all-new stories beginning with issue #7.
