Candy receives an unexpected phone call from a boy named Marty Moan, whose terrible singing voice causes chaos among her friends when he performs. When Candy doesn't show up at the Sweetie Shoppe, her friends worry she's sick, but Ted Dawson discovers she's actually devoted herself to playing the violin and wants to be left alone to practice music. Ted bursts through the screen door to rescue her, leading Candy to threaten him with her violin bow if he doesn't leave her in peace to pursue her musical aspirations.

When Ted Dawson, editor-in-chief of the Hartwick High newspaper, desperately needs glamour photos to fill the front page before deadline, he turns to two unlikely candidates: the spirited Candy O'Connor and the vain Cornelia Clyde. As Ted and his photo editor Orville attempt to capture the perfect shots—from a wild horse encounter to a pier photoshoot—the day spirals into hilarious mishaps that threaten to wreck both girls' dresses and Ted's peace of mind. In the end, Ted finds an unexpectedly clever way to solve his dilemma and keep everyone (mostly) happy.

When Candy O'Connor books teen heartthrob Marty Moan to perform at the class dance, she has no idea the chaos his appearance will unleash—girls are fainting left and right at the mere mention of his name, and the hysteria only escalates when he takes the stage. As the self-proclaimed voice of reason among her swooning classmates, Candy finds herself caught between her skepticism about all the fawning and the undeniable pandemonium his performance creates. Will Candy manage to keep the evening under control, or will she discover that even the most levelheaded girl isn't immune to Marty Moan's effect?

Candy O'Connor decides to stay home and handle all the housework so her parents can finally enjoy a Saturday out—her mother at an auction sale and her father on the golf course—but things don't go quite as planned when her well-intentioned effort to have supper ready collides with the chaos unfolding at both their destinations. It's a lighthearted tale of family sacrifice with a humorous twist that shows why good intentions don't always lead to peaceful afternoons.
