“Is it a Cinema?”

This December 1952 installment of Quality Comics' Candy — "America's Favorite Teen-Age Girl" — captures the cheerful chaos of All Team Try-Outs Day in a cover that's hard not to smile at. Candy looks on with wide-eyed exasperation as Ted strides past her wearing an wonderfully impractical combination of football shoulder pads, a baseball bat, roller skates, and what appears to be a fencing foil, clearly determined to cover every sport at once. It's the kind of lighthearted, relatable teen humor that made this series a warm slice of early-'50s everyday life for just a dime.
