Part of Marvel Legacy's "The Newer Mutants" arc, this 2018 issue poses a deeply unsettling question right on the cover: "Who Pulls the Strings?" Jon Malin's cover depicts Cable rendered as a wooden marionette — his techno-organic eye glowing, mouth agape — dangling helplessly from puppet strings beneath a looming, disembodied smile in the darkness above. It's a genuinely striking image that reframes one of Marvel's most formidable mutants as something frighteningly vulnerable, with Ed Brisson and Malin continuing to bring real creative ambition to this title.
