Bone #5
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeBone #5 (June 1992) is the fifth chapter of the landmark 'Out from Boneville' opening arc — one of the defining story-arcs of the 1990s independent comics movement — and delivers the arc's dramatic climax: a mass Rat Creature siege on Gran'ma Ben's farmhouse that forces Thorn and Fone Bone to flee into the night, with the Great Red Dragon intervening to save them. The issue also introduces Lucius Down and the town of Barrelhaven along with its tavern, locations and a character that become central to the series' sprawling fantasy world for decades. Coming from Jeff Smith's entirely self-published Cartoon Books imprint, the issue represents the small-press ambition that helped demonstrate an independent creator could sustain a long-form, all-ages fantasy epic without mainstream publisher backing. The series this issue belongs to went on to earn ten Eisner Awards and eleven Harvey Awards, and is ranked by Time Magazine as one of the ten greatest graphic novels of all time.

Jeff Smith launched Cartoon Books in 1991 specifically to self-publish Bone, after years honing the characters as a comic strip in Ohio State University's student newspaper, The Lantern. By the time issue #5 shipped in June 1992, Smith had been joined at Cartoon Books by his wife Vijaya Iyer, who came aboard as publishing and distribution partner that same year, bringing organizational infrastructure to what had been a solo operation. Issue #5 was part of the original black-and-white run that Smith wrote, drew, lettered, and published himself — a one-cartoonist production that made the consistent quality of its storytelling and cartooning all the more striking to its early readership. The issue would eventually see multiple reprints under Cartoon Books and later one printing under Image Comics (released May 1996, during the period Bone temporarily migrated to that publisher), before being folded into numerous collected editions.
