Quality Comics' Blackhawk #24 from April 1949 promises high-flying action right on the cover, where Blackhawk bursts through a latticed window in a shower of glass and wood, a blonde woman in tow, while a uniformed gunman raises his pistol from the doorway behind them. Reed Crandall's crisp linework gives the scene a tremendous sense of momentum — you can almost hear the crash. The cover copy teases "The Woman Known as Number One," and with Criminal Number One squarely in Blackhawk's sights, this issue looks like a genuinely exciting chapter for Quality's ace aviator.
