Black Knight #4
This November 1955 Atlas Comics adventure drops readers straight into a scene of treachery and confrontation: on the cover by Joe Maneely, the armored Black Knight strides dramatically through a doorway, sword and shield at the ready, while the villainous Modred the Evil — caught mid-scheme alongside a kneeling figure and scattered scrolls and goblets — is called out for his betrayal. The cover's bold declaration that this is "The Greatest Knight of Them All!" is hard to argue with when the hero makes an entrance like that. Promising "Thrills from King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table," this Arthurian action title offers exactly the kind of sword-and-honor drama that made 1950s adventure comics so irresistible.
