Secretly bidden by Merlin to King Arthur's castle, Percival of Scandia pretends to be cowardly and foppish, asking sanctuary of King Arthur due to troubles in his own land. As cousin to Modred, it is granted. Later Merlin tells him Modred is plotting against the life of the king and that he is to replace Merlin as he must soon leave. Merlin tells him he needs to maintain the ruse but must protect the realm as the Black Knight. On a hunting outing the Black Knight saves Arthur's life from Modred's henchmen and later earns knighthood from King Arthur for his deed.
