Black Adam: The Dark Age #4

The penultimate chapter of this six-part series arrives with a cover by Doug Mahnke that is genuinely hard to look away from — Black Adam, battered and bloodied in his gold-and-black costume, is swarmed by a terrifying crowd of corrupted, monstrous versions of DC's greatest heroes, including twisted takes on Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and others, all reaching for him with frenzied desperation. That tagline, "The Horror…," feels entirely earned given the visceral, nightmare-fuel imagery Mahnke renders here. Spinning directly out of 52 and Countdown, Peter J. Tomasi's dark series has clearly pushed its protagonist — and the reader — well past the point of comfort.
