“I'll Fall for You”

In "I'll Fall for You," Archie and Betty find themselves in a lighthearted predicament during a country date when a flat tire strands them at a roadside motel. Written by Dick Malmgren and illustrated by Gus Lemoine, this 1972 issue captures the classic Archie charm as the duo checks in under fake names and tries to stay dry—only to face a misunderstanding with Betty’s parents. The cover by Gus Lemoine perfectly frames the moment’s mix of innocence and comedic tension.

Archie and Betty are on a date in the country when he gets a flat tire on his jalopy. Deciding they need help, they go to a local motel, and sign in as Mr. and Mrs. A. Andrews and call a tow truck. Once in the room, Archie starts a fire and the two get out of their wet clothes and dress in blankets, putting their clothes near the fire to dry. Betty calls her parents to let them know she'll be late, but when they discover that she and Archie are in a motel room together, they become angry. When they arrive at the motel, Archie explains what happened, but the Coopers don't believe him.
