About this Collection

Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees #1 (October 2023) marks the debut of Samantha Strong — a serial-killer brown bear living among anthropomorphic animals in a cozy 1980s Vermont hamlet — one of the most original protagonist concepts to emerge from the independent comics scene in years. The series established a new genre shorthand critics dubbed 'cozy horror,' blending children's-book aesthetics with uncompromising psychological darkness in a way that had no direct precedent in mainstream comics. Without any pre-existing franchise IP behind it, the six-issue run grew entirely by word-of-mouth into one of the most-reprinted IDW Originals titles in the publisher's history, earning nominations for the Eisner Award (Best New Series and Best Limited Series), the Bram Stoker Award (Best Graphic Novel), and ultimately the 2025 Harvey Book of the Year Award. The series also proved consequential at the industry level, demonstrating that a debut creator with zero comics credits could launch a fully realized franchise — including a sequel series, a Webtoon adaptation, an Artist's Edition, and a DC crossover appearance — from a single pitch to a mid-tier publisher.

History

Patrick Horvath — previously known as a filmmaker with credits including The Pact 2 and Southbound — had no prior published comics work when he conceived the core hook of Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees around 2017, inspired partly by the children's song 'The Teddy Bears' Picnic.' The full character arc and story structure came together only after IDW Publishing expressed interest, with the series edited by Maggie Howell and assistant-edited by Jake Williams under IDW's creator-owned Originals imprint. Horvath hand-painted each page using ink and gouache, a labor-intensive production method that gave the book its distinctive children's-book visual register. Issue #1 sold out at the distributor level within days of its October 18, 2023 release date, triggering a second printing by late October and multiple subsequent printings across the series as demand continued to outpace supply.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Samantha Strong, a brown bear serial killer and the series' central protagonist, set in an anthropomorphic-animal version of small-town Vermont in autumn 1986.
  • Written, illustrated, and colored entirely by Patrick Horvath — his debut comic book work — with lettering by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou; edited by Maggie Howell and Jake Williams at IDW Publishing.
  • Issue #1 went on sale October 18, 2023, as part of IDW's creator-owned Originals imprint; it sold out at the distributor level within days and received a second printing by December 13, 2023, the same day issue #2 shipped.
  • Horvath hand-painted each page using ink and gouache, deliberately evoking children's-book illustration styles (widely compared to Richard Scarry's 'Busy Town') in deliberate contrast to the graphic serial-killer subject matter.
  • The series earned nominations for the 2024 Eisner Award for Best New Series and Best Limited Series, and the Bram Stoker Award for Best Graphic Novel; letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou won the 2024 Eisner Award for Best Lettering in part for his work on this series.
  • The series won the 2025 Harvey Award for Book of the Year — one of the most prestigious peer-voted honors in American comics.
  • A 10-page prequel one-shot, Präludium, was produced as a 1,000-copy SDCC 2024 exclusive ashcan, depicting a young Samantha's origin in 1962 Germany; the collected trade edition debuted in September 2024 as the top-selling non-Big Two graphic novel that month.
  • The franchise has since expanded to include a six-issue sequel series (Rite of Spring, 2025–2026), a Webtoon vertical-scroll adaptation (launched April 2025 in partnership with IDW), a crossover appearance in DC's DC K.O. event, a Halloween anthology special featuring James Tynion IV and other guest creators (announced 2026), and an Artist's Edition collecting the original series and Präludium (announced January 2026, releasing July 2026).
