Written by Mike W. Barr with art by Alan Davis and Todd McFarlane, the story introduces the vigilante known as the Reaper, a brutal crime-fighter from Gotham's past who challenges Batman's no-kill code. The volume also includes the 1995 sequel story 'Full Circle' from Batman Annual #11, which ties up lingering threads from the original arc.
In "Fear the Reaper," the legacy of Gotham’s darkest past resurfaces when Joseph, son of Joe Chill, dons the Reaper’s mask, reigniting old wounds. Written by Mike W. Barr and illustrated by Alan Davis, this 2003 issue sees Rachel Caspian return to Gotham, only to face a terrifying new threat tied to her father’s murder. With a haunting twist and a deadly game of psychological warfare, Batman must outwit a killer who knows his most vulnerable moment—and the cover by Alan Davis and Mark Farmer captures the chilling intensity of the moment.
In "Fear the Reaper," Gotham’s past returns when the long-dormant vigilante known as the Reaper resurfaces just as Bruce Wayne begins a fragile romance with Rachel Caspian. As Batman confronts the masked figure who once terrorized the city, he’s forced to confront his own trauma—using the same gun that killed his parents in a desperate bid to end the Reaper’s reign.
In "Deal with the Devil," Batman’s growing bond with Rachel takes a dark turn as he confronts the Reaper once more. To stop the killer’s relentless campaign, Batman allies with a shadowy cabal of mob bosses, forcing him to work alongside Joe Chill—an uneasy partnership that tests his limits.
In "Deadly Allies," Batman confronts his past when he teams up with Joe Chill, the man who killed his parents, to set a trap for the Reaper. With the weight of history and a loaded gun from that fateful night, the unlikely duo tries to end the Reaper’s reign of terror—though the villain slips through their grasp once more.
In "So Shall Ye Reap," Bruce Wayne’s proposal to Rachel takes a dark turn when the Reaper ambushes a gathering of mob bosses, forcing Batman into a desperate, delayed intervention. After the Reaper escapes and Joe Chill is left unconscious, Batman confronts the former killer in the very alley where the Waynes died—only to see Chill murdered before his eyes. The story builds to a final, brutal clash between Batman and the Reaper, culminating in the killer’s demise. Later, Batman quietly disposes of Chill’s gun at the Wayne Foundation, and Rachel retreats to a convent, seeking redemption for her father’s sins.
In "Full Circle," Joseph Chill—son of the man who killed Bruce Wayne’s parents—steps into the Reaper’s mask, reigniting a legacy of vengeance. When Rachel Caspian returns to Gotham, drawn by fear and the ghost of her father’s past, she becomes entangled in a deadly game of memory and manipulation. With Marcia’s help and a chilling re-creation of Batman’s trauma, Joseph aims to break the Dark Knight—but not all alliances are what they seem.
