About this Issue

Batman (2016) #46 is the middle chapter of 'The Travelers,' the three-part arc Tom King and Tony S. Daniel constructed as a bridge between the 'Rules of Engagement' storyline and the much-anticipated Batman–Catwoman wedding in issue #50. By placing Booster Gold at the center of an alternate-timeline story in which Thomas and Martha Wayne survived Crime Alley — meaning Bruce never became Batman and Dick Grayson filled the cowl instead, armed with a gun — King used a classic DC time-travel device to interrogate what the Batman identity actually means and why Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne are fundamentally drawn to each other regardless of the world they inhabit. The arc sits within a larger, editorially ambitious 85-issue King run that used the DC Rebirth initiative to re-examine Batman's psychology and his romance with Catwoman, and 'The Travelers' represents King's most direct engagement with the consequences of that relationship on the broader DC timeline.

History

The issue shipped on May 2, 2018, as part of the DC Rebirth-era Batman series that launched in June 2016. Tony S. Daniel — who had previously both written and drawn Batman during the New 52 era — returned to the title here as a guest artist collaborating with King for the first time, with Sandu Florea and Livesay providing inks and Tomeu Morey handling colors. An Olivier Coipel variant cover was also produced. DC's own promotional copy for issue #45 noted that Daniel's return marked 'the start of a new story that will sow the seeds for a whole new epic to come,' framing the arc as deliberate table-setting for the wedding event rather than a standalone detour.

Trivia · 7 facts

  • Part two of the three-part 'The Travelers' arc (Batman #45–47), set during Tom King's DC Rebirth run on the title (Batman vol. 3, launched 2016).
  • Written by Tom King; pencils and cover by Tony S. Daniel; inks by Sandu Florea and Livesay; colors by Tomeu Morey; variant cover by Olivier Coipel.
  • The issue continues an alternate-timeline story triggered by Booster Gold's botched wedding gift to Batman: he accidentally prevented the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne, creating a world where Bruce Wayne never became Batman.
  • In this altered Gotham, Dick Grayson has taken on the Batman mantle — portrayed as a darker, gun-wielding figure — while Bruce Wayne is alive but lacks the trauma that forged him into the Dark Knight.
  • The issue picks up 'One Year Later' from #45, with a now-bearded Booster Gold attempting to recruit this timeline's Catwoman to help him undo the damage, because Bruce refuses to cooperate.
  • The arc was designed as a direct narrative bridge to Batman #50 (the Batman–Catwoman wedding issue), with DC promotional material describing it as setting up 'the next big development in the Batman/Catwoman romance.'
  • Collected in the trade paperback Batman Vol. 6: Bride or Burglar? along with issues #45, 47, and surrounding chapters of the pre-wedding story.
