Batman #42 is the second chapter of the 'Superheavy' arc, the audacious Snyder-Capullo experiment in which Jim Gordon — not Bruce Wayne — operates as a corporate-sanctioned, GCPD-backed Batman in a towering mech-suit, forcing the series to interrogate what the Batman symbol actually means when stripped of its founder. The 'Superheavy' arc grew directly out of the conclusion of 'Endgame,' in which both Bruce Wayne and the Joker were left for dead beneath Gotham City. In interviews at the time of the arc's launch, Scott Snyder explained that Jim Gordon was always his specific choice for the successor Batman — the story's driving question was not how to build a robot suit, but who among Gotham's citizens would step up when Bruce was gone. Snyder had originally considered 'Endgame' as a potential series finale, but the 'Superheavy' concept gave him and Capullo a reason to continue, spinning the mythology in a new direction before the New 52 era concluded.
