“Zero Year: Dark City”

Part of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's "Zero Year: Dark City" arc, this 2014 New 52 chapter wraps its tension in a striking visual puzzle — literally. The cover, inked by Danny Miki over Capullo's pencils, fills a giant question mark with a dense tangle of bones and organic matter, through which Batman's masked face peers out with glowing blue lenses. It's a quietly unsettling image that lets the Riddler's shadow loom large without showing him at all.
