The issue grew directly out of Snyder's editorial position on the New 52 Batman title, where he and Capullo had just completed the massive 'Death of the Family' Joker arc and needed a compact, emotionally grounded bridge story before launching 'Zero Year' in Batman #21. Snyder had previously built his pre-New 52 Bat-reputation on shorter two- and three-part Detective Comics stories, and 'Nowhere Man' reflects that tighter storytelling mode. The backup feature, 'Ghost Lights' Part 2, was scripted by James Tynion IV with art by Alex Maleev — a natural pairing, as Tynion had been brought into the Batman titles at Snyder's personal request, the two having a mentor-student relationship from Snyder's time teaching at Sarah Lawrence College. Editors Mike Marts and Katie Kubert oversaw the issue, with FCO Plascencia on colors for the main story and Nathan Fairbairn coloring the backup.
