“The Shield Versus The Black Hood”

In "The Shield Versus The Black Hood," Sgt. Lee Forest—known to his comrades as 'Yellow Eyes' for his striking gaze and eerie grace—recounts a wartime debt repaid in the wilds of Africa. Drawn by Dick Ayers, the story captures a haunting, feral intensity as Forest, a man shaped by war and jungle survival, steps back into the shadows after a final, feral act of loyalty. The cover by Paul Reinman evokes the story’s primal tension, a stark image of two figures locked in silent confrontation beneath a moonlit sky.

Sgt. Lee Forest, nick-named 'Yellow Eyes' by the other members of his platoon, is a giant of a man, with an almost cat-like way of moving. Serving in Africa during World War II, his life is saved by another member of the platoon. Both men go their separate ways after the war, though both remain in Africa. When his savior is attacked by a lion, Forest emerges from the jungle and calls it off. His debt repayed, 'Yellow Eyes' returns to his true home - the depths of the jungle.
