“The Shield Versus The Black Hood”

In "The Shield Versus The Black Hood," Sgt. Lee Forest—known to his comrades as 'Yellow Eyes'—reemerges from the African jungle decades after a wartime rescue, his cat-like grace and towering presence a silent echo of a past he thought he'd left behind. When the man who once saved his life is threatened by a lion, Forest steps back into the wild to settle an old debt, only to vanish once more into the shadows. Dick Ayers handles both pencils and inks for the story, while Paul Reinman delivers the striking cover art for this 1977 Alan Class publication, a 0.15 GBP issue of Astounding Stories.

Sgt. Lee Forest, nick-named 'Yellow Eyes' by the other members of his platoon, is a giant of a man, with an almost cat-like way of moving. Serving in Africa during World War II, his life is saved by another member of the platoon. Both men go their separate ways after the war, though both remain in Africa. When his savior is attacked by a lion, Forest emerges from the jungle and calls it off. His debt repayed, 'Yellow Eyes' returns to his true home - the depths of the jungle.
