“Chapter Six: Tomorrow's Dawn”

The concluding chapter of Kurt Busiek and Carlos Pacheco's alternate-history WWI fantasy arrives with a cover — penciled by Pacheco and inked by Jesús Merino — that pits a young soldier and a white-hatted figure against a genuinely menacing trio of fanged, glowing-eyed vampires and a hulking stone golem, all lit by the flicker of a small conjured flame. The atmosphere is tense and claustrophobic, the creatures closing in from the darkness above while the heroes below look very much on the back foot. Six issues in, Arrowsmith has consistently blended the horrors of the Great War with dark fantasy, and this "Survival Number" promises a fittingly dramatic finish.
