Army@Love #12
The "Season Finale" banner says it all — Veitch and Erskine are closing out the first arc of this sharp Vertigo satire in April 2008 style. The cover, penciled by Rick Veitch and inked by Gary Erskine, centers on a glamorous blonde woman in a bold red-and-gold striped dress, casually holding lipstick in one hand and a ring in the other while a bandaged, wild-eyed figure looms behind her clutching a firing pistol — all of it set against a backdrop of smoldering rubble and chaos. It's a wonderfully absurd image that captures the series' signature blend of warfare and consumer culture, and the Washington Post's "Best of the Year" nod is well-earned recognition for one of 2008's most provocative reads.
