“The Dish”

The cover of this January 1975 issue tells the gag with perfect timing: big, earnest Moose in his red varsity sweater asks a classmate where the school dispensary is, only to be cheerfully directed straight through the screen door — and the lower panel delivers the inevitable, cringe-worthy result, with Archie and Veronica wincing at the crash. Harry Lucey's linework gives the slapstick a wonderfully fluid energy, and a lively little frieze of Riverdale teens across the top adds to the breezy, fun atmosphere. If you enjoy the Archie gang at their most endearingly chaotic, Pals 'n' Gals #91 is a delightful slice of mid-seventies Riverdale hijinks.
