“Archie the Magician”
About this Collection

This hardcover collection from Dark Horse's Archie Archives series reprints classic Archie comics from the early 1940s, featuring the wholesome misadventures of Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Jughead Jones, and the rest of the Riverdale gang. Alongside the lighthearted tales of school, soda shops, and springtime shenanigans, the volume also includes early appearances of superhero characters like The Shield and The Hangman, reflecting the publisher's wartime era output. It's a nostalgic look at the Golden Age of Archie, preserving the original stories and art for modern readers.

In "Archie the Magician," Archie's misguided attempt to become a jockey after a casual comment from Jughead leads to a series of mishaps, including a visit from the eccentric Dr. Breakbone, a grueling workout, and a broken arm. Written and illustrated by Harry Sahle, with inks by Ginger, this classic tale from Archie Archives #2 (2016) captures the humor and heart of Riverdale’s most well-meaning teen, all while delivering a lighthearted twist on a whimsical premise. The cover by Harry Sahle complements the story’s playful tone.

When Jughead mentions that jockeys have to be a certain weight, Archie stuffs himself in hopes of becoming overweight. Archie gets sick and is visited by Dr. Breakbone. Dr. Breakbone gives Archie a vigorous exercise routine and Archie breaks his arm. When he tells Mr. Lodge of the incident, Mr. Lodge says picking Archie to be a jockey was only a joke.
