“Paper Chase”

A football game at Riverdale has gone sideways on the cover of this January 1987 issue, with an orange-uniformed player hoisting a referee off the ground while Archie — in his blue number-15 jersey — looks on in disbelief as a bystander quips, "But, Archie, what makes you think the referee favored the other team?!" A cheerleader in an "R" uniform watches from the sideline while a packed, cheering crowd fills the stands behind the mid-field chaos, all rendered in Dan DeCarlo's reliably lively linework. It's a fun, good-natured snapshot of Riverdale's spirited (if contentious) gridiron culture, wrapped up in a cover that captures exactly why Archie has always been such an entertaining read.
