Arak / Son of Thunder #37
In "Once upon a Unicorn," the Frankish court is abuzz with the arrival of a mythical beast, its taming said to require a maiden’s purity—leaving Valda in the spotlight. With Arak’s quiet support and Malagigi’s magic keeping the unicorn from chaos, tensions rise when the foreign envoy challenges Valda to a joust, claiming her hand if he wins. The outcome shocks everyone, but the truth behind the victory brings a moment of quiet revelation. Written by Roy and Dann Thomas, with Ernie Colón handling both interior art and cover, this 1984 issue blends folklore and personal stakes in a tale that lingers beyond the final page.

A foreign envoy has brought a gift for the Frankish king: a unicorn. All they need to tame it is a maiden, and all eyes turn to Valda. But, they don't know about her relationship with Arak, and the unicorn has to be pacified by Malagigi's magic when it goes wild. Later on, the envoy challenges Valda to a joust; if he wins, she becomes his wife. Amazingly, the fat little man does win, but before the marriage can be completed, Rinaldo confesses that he gave the envoy a magic lance so that Valda would lose. He wanted her to be happy, but didn't realize how much she wanted to remain a knight.
