Arak / Son of Thunder #14
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis October 1982 DC adventure puts Arak, Son of Thunder in a truly unsettling predicament — the cover by Alfredo Alcala shows the bare-chested, lightning-flanked warrior apparently trapped within a woven tapestry, crying out in horror as three hooded, red-robed figures work a spinning wheel before him. A watching woman looks on in dread, while the cover blurbs proclaim these sinister weavers to be the "Weavers of Fate" spinning a "Tapestry of Doom." Roy Thomas, Dann Thomas, and Ernie Colón deliver the interior story "Heritage of Blood!" — and with a setup this ominous on the cover, it's easy to see why Arak's world of swords-and-sorcery adventure kept readers coming back in the early 1980s.

As the campaign against the Avar Huns begins, Valda uses a lull in the action to bathe in a nearby river. But, she is soon attacked by the Avars' fearsome carnivorous horses. Valda fights valiantly, but she's overmatched and is soon knocked unconscious. Just before starting their grisly feast, the horses are called off by a man wearing an elaborate golden horse mask. Why was she spared?
