“Last Supper”

This mid-1994 Vertigo entry in Jamie Delano and Steve Pugh's run on Animal Man carries one of the series' most unsettling cover images: a pale, rhinoceros-like creature lies on its back, claws outstretched, pinned beneath a massive vintage television camera labeled simply "Television." Mark Chiarello's cover art uses a stark red-and-sage palette to give the composition an almost propagandistic chill, the beast's vulnerability set against the cold mechanical weight bearing down on it. With a story titled "Last Supper," this issue promises the kind of thoughtful, provocative storytelling that made this Vertigo title a standout of its era.
