American Vampire: Second Cycle #11
The final issue of "Dark Moon" arrives with a cover by Rafael Albuquerque that's genuinely unsettling — a lone astronaut tumbles helplessly through a starless void, dwarfed by a massive, organic hand-like structure of gnarled purple branches reaching down from above, its fingers curling as if to claim its prey. That crimson X slashed across the figure adds a cold, fatalistic weight to the image, suggesting something vast and ancient has marked this person for reasons we can only dread. Scott Snyder and Albuquerque close out this arc in 2016 with the kind of atmospheric dread that has made American Vampire: Second Cycle one of Vertigo's most compelling horror runs.
