“The Death of Ambush Bug”

The fourth and final chapter of DC's irreverent 1985 mini-series goes out with a gleefully unhinged bang — the cover by Keith Giffen and Bob Oksner splits the image into horizontal panels showing a massive red-faced villain roaring in close-up, a wild-eyed Ambush Bug mugging shamelessly in the middle strip, and an imposing "4" looming over the whole chaotic composition. The cover copy promises that Scabbard "returns from the dead" in a story they just had to call "Whoops," which tells you everything you need to know about the tone Keith Giffen and Robert Loren Fleming are going for. If you've enjoyed the series' cheerfully anarchic humor, this finale looks like a thoroughly satisfying send-off.
