About this Issue

Amazing Spider-Man: Blood Hunt #3 (July 2024) serves as the conclusion of a tightly self-contained three-issue tie-in to Marvel's summer 2024 Blood Hunt crossover event, and its chief narrative distinction is the resolution of Morbius's role as the Marvel Universe's only viable hope for a partial vampirism cure — a concept that recasts the character's decades-long tragic self-image as a scientific asset rather than merely a horror antagonist. The issue is also significant as part of a broader editorial push by Marvel to foreground Morbius's unique status: as GamesRadar noted, he is technically the first vampire depicted by name in the Marvel Universe, with his 'living vampire' qualifier having originally been engineered to sidestep Comics Code Authority restrictions on depicting undead creatures. By ending with Morbius retaining the Hemoglobin Inc. lab and its equipment, the issue leaves an open narrative thread — a potential path toward a self-cure — that marks a meaningful forward step for the character within the ongoing continuity. As the closing chapter of the only dedicated Spider-Man tie-in miniseries in Blood Hunt, it also represents a rare event-era spotlight on the Daughters of the Dragon pairing of Misty Knight and Colleen Wing alongside the Lizard.

History

The three-issue miniseries was announced in February 2024 as a tie-in to writer Jed MacKay and artist Pepe Larraz's Blood Hunt crossover event. Writer Justina Ireland — a New York Times bestselling novelist (Dread Nation, Deathless Divide) and one of the story architects of Star Wars: The High Republic — was tapped by editor Nick Lowe to script the series, with Marcelo Ferreira (Moon Knight: City of the Dead) handling pencils for the main story portions and Chris Campana sharing art duties on the backup segments. The series spun directly out of Amazing Spider-Man (2022) #49, establishing its continuity anchor before the miniseries launched in May 2024 with issue #3 shipping on July 17, 2024. The full miniseries was subsequently collected in a trade paperback alongside Amazing Spider-Man #49 and Miles Morales: Spider-Man #21–22.

  • Main cast: Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Morbius (Dr. Michael Morbius), Misty Knight, Colleen Wing, the Lizard, Maxine Danger, and villain Theocritus (Thomas/T.J.) of Hemoglobin Inc.
  • Story resolution: Spider-Man combines Morbius's partial cure with his own web-formula and releases it through the building's air ducts, saving the Hemoglobin Inc. vampires — people involuntarily converted — while Morbius himself cannot be cured.
  • Colleen Wing is vampirized by Theocritus's forces during the assault on Hemoglobin Inc., creating a dramatic conflict with Misty Knight — the most significant character-status development in the issue.
  • Hemoglobin Inc. disbands by the issue's end; Maxine Danger recaptures Theocritus and leaves the lab and all research equipment to Morbius, setting up a potential future cure arc for the character.
  • Theocritus (T.J.) is identified as a former Beyond Corporation employee who stole Beyond material, renamed himself, and used Morbius's blood samples to develop three vampire-related serums (Lure, Change, and a hunger-suppression formula).
  • The complete miniseries (issues #1–3) was collected in the Amazing Spider-Man: Blood Hunt trade paperback (ISBN 9781302958619), which also includes Amazing Spider-Man #49 and Miles Morales: Spider-Man #21–22.
  • A Junggeun Yoon variant cover exists for this issue alongside the standard Marcelo Ferreira cover.
