Alpha Flight #8
Alpha Flight #8 (March 1984) marks the debut of Nemesis (Isabel St. Ives), one of John Byrne's most distinctive creations — an undead avenger whose entire existence is built around a single, intensely personal mission of retribution rooted in World War I mythology. The character introduced a genuinely dark, morally ambiguous archetype into Alpha Flight's roster of largely heroic Canadians, establishing a mantle that would be passed to three subsequent incarnations across four decades of Marvel continuity. In "Genesis," Shaman leads the enigmatic Pássaro da Neve on a journey to meet his friend Hudson, the two sharing quiet moments beneath the northern sky. When Hudson’s wife, Heather, witnesses the young woman transform into a bird, the truth of her origins begins to unfold—revealing a mystery tied to ancient magic and the promise of a greater purpose. As the first threads of destiny weave together, the path to joining Alpha Flight begins.

The issue was written, penciled, and inked entirely by John Byrne, under editors Denny O'Neil and Linda Grant — a creative configuration that defined the series' first two-and-a-half years and gave Byrne unusual solo control over an ongoing Marvel title. Byrne conceived both Deadly Ernest and Nemesis as thematically linked characters, grounding their origins in the trenches of World War I and using the supernatural bargain-with-Death conceit to explore survivor's guilt and generational trauma in genre terms. The dual-story format Byrne employed throughout his Alpha Flight run continues here: the main Northstar/Aurora/Nemesis plot is paired with a back-up installment continuing the untold origin of Snowbird, with James MacDonald Hudson and Heather Hudson appearing in that secondary narrative as well.
