About this Issue

All-New Captain America #1 marks the first time Sam Wilson — the Falcon, Marvel's first African American superhero — takes the starring role as Captain America in his own ongoing title, a mantle-transfer that had been building since the Remender run aged Steve Rogers out of action. The issue carries genuine cultural weight: it put a Black man front and center under one of Marvel's most politically charged symbols at a moment when those politics were openly discussed in mainstream media, with Marvel announcing the change on The Colbert Report. The series also introduced Ian Rogers operating as the new Nomad in his first full-issue role as Sam's partner, seeding a supporting cast that would carry forward into multiple subsequent volumes. Remender's storytelling choice to present Sam not as a Steve Rogers facsimile — he retains his wings, lacks the Super-Soldier Serum, and brings a warmer, less rigid temperament — was a deliberate creative argument that the Captain America identity could evolve beyond its original template.

History

The transition grew directly out of Rick Remender's preceding Captain America run (vol. 7, 2012–2014), in which Steve Rogers was de-aged and then de-powered by the loss of the Super-Soldier Serum, setting the stage for a handoff. Marvel announced on July 16, 2014 — with the news delivered on The Colbert Report — that Sam Wilson would become the new Captain America, with Remender and artist Stuart Immonen attached as the creative team. The book launched November 12, 2014 (cover-dated January 2015) as part of the Avengers NOW! initiative, a company-wide relaunch that also included a female Thor debuting the same week, and it was edited by Tom Brevoort under editor-in-chief Axel Alonso. The series ran for six issues before being succeeded by a Secret Wars tie-in (Hail Hydra) and then the separate Nick Spencer / Daniel Acuña ongoing Captain America: Sam Wilson, which launched in October 2015.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First issue to star Sam Wilson — formerly the Falcon — as Captain America in his own self-titled solo series; released November 12, 2014 with a January 2015 cover date.
  • Written by Rick Remender with interior art and cover by Stuart Immonen (inks by Wade Von Grawbadger, colors by Marte Gracia); edited by Tom Brevoort under editor-in-chief Axel Alonso.
  • Sam Wilson retains his Falcon wings and his bird-empathy link with Redwing rather than relying on Steve Rogers's Super-Soldier physiology, making him a mechanically and thematically distinct Captain America.
  • First full issue featuring Ian Rogers (Steve's adopted son from Dimension Z) in the Nomad role as Sam's partner — a codename with a long history in Captain America lore dating back to Steve Rogers's own Nomad persona in 1974.
  • Announced publicly on July 16, 2014 on The Colbert Report as part of a wave of Marvel diversity initiatives that same week also included the debut of a female Thor.
  • Part of the Avengers NOW! company-wide relaunch; the series is a six-issue limited run set directly after the events of Remender's Captain America vol. 7 and concludes before Secret Wars reshapes the Marvel line.
  • The overarching plot involves Hydra's 'High Sect' — a coalition of Steve Rogers's classic rogues (Baron Zemo, Sin, Crossbones, Taskmaster, Baron Blood, Batroc, Viper) — uniting to target the untested new Captain America.
  • Collected in Captain America: Sam Wilson — The Complete Collection Vol. 1 (TPB, 2020), which also gathers the Fear Him digital series, Amazing Spider-Man Special, Inhuman Special, and the first arc of Captain America: Sam Wilson (2015).
