The series grew directly out of Rick Remender's preceding Captain America run (2012–2014), in which Steve Rogers was drained of the Super-Soldier Serum and aged rapidly, narratively necessitating a successor. Marvel's Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada made the announcement on The Colbert Report on July 16, 2014 — a deliberately high-profile media moment — just one day after the company revealed that Thor would become a woman, both changes packaged under the Avengers NOW! initiative. Remender was paired with Stuart Immonen, whose clean, kinetic linework gave the book a more optimistic, spy-fi energy than the grimmer Dimension Z arc that preceded it; Tom Brevoort edited the series. The six-issue limited run was published from November 2014 through April 2015, after which it was effectively superseded by the post-Secret Wars relaunch title Captain America: Sam Wilson, written by Nick Spencer.
