“Chapter Three: Bargaining”
About this Issue

Ain't No Grave #3 represents the emotional and structural turning point of Skottie Young and Jorge Corona's third consecutive Image Comics collaboration — a creative partnership that has, across Middlewest and The Me You Love in the Dark, steadily pushed the boundaries of genre-blending indie storytelling. This issue introduces Madam Gates as a fully realized antagonist, using a high-stakes riverboat poker game as both literal plot engine and thematic mirror for protagonist Ryder's moral compromises, marking the moment the series' dark fantasy ambitions fully crystallize. Critics noted that issue #3 is where the book stops feeling like a setup and starts functioning as a deeply emotional examination of mortality, regret, and self-determination — territory rarely explored with such tonal sophistication in the Western genre. As the midpoint of a five-issue mature-readers miniseries pitched at the intersection of Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven and Guillermo del Toro's visual imagination, it is the chapter where the series earned its reputation as one of the more daring genre hybrids of 2024 in independent comics.

History

Ain't No Grave was announced by Image Comics in February 2024 as the third major collaboration between Eisner Award–winning writer Skottie Young and Eisner Award–nominated artist Jorge Corona, following their Eisner-nominated Middlewest and the Bram Stoker Award–nominated The Me You Love in the Dark. The consistent supporting team — colorist Jean-François Beaulieu and letterer Nate Piekos, both veterans of those earlier series — returned as well, giving the book a visual continuity with the duo's prior work. Young described the project publicly as a genre-bending western tale the two had been developing together, while Corona framed it as a synthesis of their favorite elements from previous books, wrapped in the violence of a classic Western. Issue #3 shipped on July 10, 2024, as part of a five-issue run, and the complete series was later collected in a trade paperback released December 4, 2024.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Written by Skottie Young (Eisner Award winner) with art by Jorge Corona (Eisner Award nominee); this is their third Image Comics miniseries collaboration after Middlewest and The Me You Love in the Dark.
  • Colorist Jean-François Beaulieu and letterer Nate Piekos round out the creative team — the same core support unit from the duo's two prior Image series.
  • Editor on the issue is Marla Eizik; Jorge Corona also provided the main cover, with a 1:25 retailer incentive variant cover drawn by Skottie Young.
  • Issue #3 (of 5) shipped July 10, 2024, at 32 pages total (23 pages of story), rated for mature readers.
  • The issue introduces Madam Gates — the supernatural matriarch of a riverboat casino — as a significant new character; she offers Ryder a winner-take-all card game: win and earn a marker redeemable for anything, lose and become a permanent slave aboard the vessel.
  • Young's script employs parallel-timeline storytelling, intercutting the riverboat poker game with flashbacks to Ryder's marriage that deepen her characterization and illuminate the moral compromises at the series' core.
  • Ain't No Grave is a five-issue limited series (May–September 2024) billed as an original macabre Western/fantasy for mature readers, with the full run collected in Ain't No Grave TP Vol. 1 (Image Comics, December 4, 2024).
  • The series has no announced adaptations as of the research date; it is an original creator-owned Image Comics property with no connection to Marvel or DC continuity.
