Something unsettling lurks behind the smiling faces on Lee Bermejo's striking cover for Adventures of Superman #617 (August 2003): a skull-faced figure wearing the Superman crest looms in icy blue behind two sharply dressed, grinning individuals who together hold out a copy of an Encyclopedia Universal. The contrast between their cheerful, almost conspiratorial expressions and the towering, skeletal presence at their backs gives the whole image a deeply eerie undertone.
