A writer discovers an incomplete manuscript about a crime machine that was supposedly ready for burial, but the manuscript pages are barely dry. When he investigates further, he learns that dead men recently involved in a robbery were connected to the machine, and he becomes caught between a supernatural or mechanical force and those desperate to stop its operation before it kills everyone. The story culminates as characters attempt to escape from or destroy the unstoppable device.

When Martin and Jane Bonny vacation on a remote Maine island rumored to hold the buried treasure of the infamous pirate Captain Josiah Black, a chance discovery in an underwater cave draws them into something far darker than fortune-hunting.
