"Lavinia's Ghost" follows a man who discovers a mysterious woman with supernatural powers at a TV station reception; when he tries to identify her, he learns she died twenty years ago and may be a ghost seeking revenge. The second story, "The Firebird," depicts an Arabian legend of a mythical phoenix-like creature that burns and resurrects every five hundred years; men seek to control it for world domination, but an old Arab warns that knowledge of the firebird's secret must remain hidden to preserve peace.
When Ted Mather and his guests conduct a séance meant to contact a ancestor, they accidentally summon Aunt Lavinia—a spirit determined to stop something far darker from crossing into the mortal world. As Ted learns his family's terrible history, he discovers that a 17th-century sorcerer named Octavius Mather, burned for witchcraft centuries ago, has been unleashed and is now hunting the descendants of those who condemned him. Aunt Lavinia must race against time to protect the living before Octavius's vengeance consumes everyone around her.
When Rod Randall buys a suspiciously cheap television set as a gift for his rival Joe Geer, he discovers it broadcasts something no earthly network could air—a message from Mordo, a spirit-world recruiter hungry for souls with television experience. Rod and his companion Enid find themselves pulled into a nightmarish realm beyond imagination, where they must use their wits to survive Mordo's schemes and escape back to the living world. But the price of their return may be far higher than either of them anticipated.
When William, Duke of Normandy invaded England in 1066 to claim the throne, King Harold marched his army to meet him at Senlac Hill near Hastings—only to fall mortally wounded as the battle turned against the English. According to legend, the spirit of King Harold has haunted that fateful ground ever since, appearing in ghostly form every hundred years to lead a phantom army through the skies above the hill where he fell.
Kent Bullard's inexplicable dread of certain people has haunted him for years, but a shattered thermometer finally cracks the mystery—his terror traces back to mercury, and perhaps to something far darker in his family's past. When a blotted name in the Bullard family tree and tales of a restless curse at Bullard Manor in England beckon him and his companion Jean across the Atlantic, they discover that some horrors are meant to stay buried. Confronting spectral eyes, phantom footsteps, and a ghostly message scrawled across a moonlit room, Kent must unearth the truth behind the evil that has shadowed his name for centuries.
