Hughes established a template — rotating supernatural short stories, a recurring haunt-of-the-month structure, and gothic literary adaptation — that would define the pre-Code horror genre for the next decade. The issue's storytelling range, from werewolf pulp to a comics-adapted Horace Walpole novel, signaled that horror comics could draw on literary tradition as well as lurid invention. ACG grew out of the Sangor Shop, a New York packaging studio founded by Benjamin W. Sangor that had been supplying ready-made comics content to other publishers since the late 1930s. By 1943 Sangor had formed American Comics Group as his own publishing arm, with Harry Donenfeld — the DC Comics financier — helping capitalize the venture and providing newsstand distribution through Independent News Company. When Fred Iger bought into the business in 1948, ACG launched Adventures into the Unknown under the B&I Publishing imprint, with Richard E. Hughes as editor; Hughes had been working alongside Sangor since the mid-1930s and would remain the title's guiding editorial hand for its entire nineteen-year run. The debut issue drew on pulp-fiction talent, with most of the scripts attributed to Frank Belknap Long, a veteran horror and science fiction writer closely associated with the H. P. Lovecraft circle.
