“The Thing That Grew!”

In "The Thing That Grew!", a desperate scientist uses a mysterious projector to banish his enemies to another world, but when one returns—terrified and desperate—he’s forced to confront the consequences of his creation. With the beam still active and other victims trapped on the other side, the man stands at a crossroads, torn between saving them and risking an invasion. The story ends with a chilling direct appeal to the reader: "What would you do?" — a haunting moment drawn in the wild, exaggerated style of Basil Wolverton, whose bold art defines the issue’s eerie tone. The cover, a dynamic collaboration by George Tuska and Joe Maneely, captures the story’s escalating dread.

A scientist uses a projector that banishes people he dislikes to another world. A light indicates where the beam connects both worlds and one of the men returns. He shoves the scientist through the aperture where he is killed by the natives. Other victims rush forward hoping to escape but the man switches off the device. The story ends with the man uncertain what to do: turn the beam on and rescue the other victims which might allow the attackers to pour through, or shut it off and condemn them to die. He addresses the reader directly, asking "What would you do?"
