About this Issue

Action Comics #269 holds a firm place in Silver Age Superman-family history as the debut of Jerro the Merboy, the Atlantean teen who became one of Supergirl's defining early romantic interests — a relationship that mirrored the Lori Lemaris strand already established for Superman and reinforced the deliberate emotional architecture Mort Weisinger was building around Kara Zor-El. The Supergirl backup, titled 'Supergirl's First Romance!', marked the first time DC gave the Girl of Steel a sustained love-interest storyline of her own, signaling that writers were treating her as a fully realized protagonist rather than a novelty appendage to the Superman title. Taken together with the lead 'Truth Mirror!' story — in which Lois Lane comes closer than almost anyone to genuinely unmasking Clark Kent, only to be outwitted by Superman's robot stand-ins — the issue is a concentrated showcase of the two most durable Silver Age Superman-family plot engines: the secret-identity comedy and the romantic triangle.

In "The Truth Mirror!", Lois Lane gets her hands on a mysterious mirror from her uncle—one that supposedly reveals a person's true nature. When she uses it to uncover Superman's secret identity as Clark Kent, the Man of Steel quickly turns the tables, planting doubt about the mirror's reliability. Written by Jerry Siegel and brought to life by Curt Swan’s crisp art and Stan Kaye’s inks, this 1960 classic features a cover by Swan and Kaye that captures the moment’s intrigue.

History

Both stories in the issue were scripted by Jerry Siegel, who was in the midst of his prolific Silver Age return to DC writing Supergirl backup features throughout the Action Comics run under editor Mort Weisinger. The lead 'Truth Mirror!' story was penciled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye — the team that Weisinger was rapidly cementing as the flagship artistic voice of the Superman line — while 'Supergirl's First Romance!' was drawn entirely by Jim Mooney, the artist Weisinger had selected as Supergirl's regular visual interpreter since her earliest appearances in the title. The issue went on sale August 30, 1960, with an October 1960 cover date, and carried the standard ten-cent cover price of the era.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Jerro the Merboy (also credited as 'Jerro'), an Atlantean from the underwater city of Tritonis, who goes on to become one of pre-Crisis Supergirl's most recurring Silver Age love interests, reappearing in Action Comics through the mid-1960s.
  • Contains two complete stories: the 12-page Superman lead 'The Truth Mirror!' (script: Jerry Siegel; pencils: Curt Swan; inks: Stan Kaye) and the 12-page Supergirl backup 'Supergirl's First Romance!' (script: Jerry Siegel; art: Jim Mooney), plus a one-page Tricksy filler strip by Henry Boltinoff.
  • Editor throughout was Mort Weisinger, the architect of the expansive Silver Age Superman mythology who oversaw the title until Action Comics #392 (1970).
  • In 'The Truth Mirror!', Lois Lane uses a magical mirror supposedly owned by Merlin to deduce that Clark Kent is Superman; Superman foils her by deploying a Superman Robot and a Lois Lane Robot to make the mirror appear unreliable.
  • In 'Supergirl's First Romance!', Supergirl is summoned by Lori Lemaris to assist Atlantis during a crisis, where she meets and falls for Jerro — explicitly framed as Supergirl's first romantic experience, paralleling Superman's own Atlantean romance with Lori Lemaris.
  • 'Supergirl's First Romance!' has been reprinted multiple times: in Action Comics #334 (March 1966), the Supergirl Archives Vol. 2, Showcase Presents: Supergirl Vol. 1, the Supergirl: The Silver Age Omnibus Vol. 1, and DC Finest: Supergirl: The Girl of Steel.
  • 'The Truth Mirror!' lead story was reprinted in Superman #197 (June–July 1967), The Best of DC #38, Superman in Action Comics (Abbeville Press, 1993), and Showcase Presents: Superman Vol. 2 (2006).
  • The issue also features the first appearance of Freddy Blake, a minor supporting character associated with the Supergirl story.
