“The Rules”

In "The Rules," Wally Wood’s sharp art and Marie Severin’s bold colors bring to life a poignant moment in military aviation history, as Sgt. Warner grapples with guilt and redemption after a tragic accident. When a fellow pilot’s life hangs in the balance due to a risky mission, Warner steps in—driven by sorrow and duty—taking to the skies to honor a fallen comrade’s memory. The story, rendered with emotional precision, finds power in quiet courage, with George Evans’ cover capturing the weight of that fateful decision.

Sgt. Warner is a lowly greasemonkey after washing out of flight training when a horrible accident kills his best friend. To make sure the base Captain's life is spared from going on a dangerous mission (and whose wife had just had a baby), Stu takes the plane up and completes the mission, trying to make up for the death of this officer's son who died in flight training.
