“The Gift”

The cover of A-Next #5 frames a tense standoff in what looks like war-torn rubble, where Stinger in her purple-and-silver costume plants herself defiantly between an advancing American Dream and the towering, green-cloaked figure of Doctor Doom — her speech bubble making her loyalties startlingly clear. Flanking the action are several other members of the next-generation Avengers team, including a figure in a Captain America uniform, while the corner box promises a guest appearance by the Fantastic Five for good measure. Ron Frenz and Al Milgrom bring a kinetic, classic Marvel energy to this February 1999 installment of Tom DeFalco and Frenz's MC2 vision of tomorrow's heroes.
