“Inferno, Part 1”

A coiled, serpentine green alien has wrapped itself around a yellow-suited spacefarer, whose red helmet glints under its crushing grip while a gun blazes in the struggle — it's a tense, visceral snapshot of humanity versus extraterrestrial menace straight from 1977's most daring weekly anthology. The starburst caption — "Take 'em from behind — best way to KILL those SLIMY aliens!" — sets a pulpy, irreverent tone that 2000 AD was already making its signature. Lopez's cover art crackles with kinetic energy, and with John Wagner and Ian Gibson contributing to this prog's interior, issue 36 is a fine example of the anthology firing on all cylinders.
