“Slaves”

A massive, textured Tyrannosaurus rex dominates this June 1977 cover of 2000 AD Prog 17, its enormous frame fused with two horrified human figures — Johnson, Mills, and Shepherd, as the cover caption cheerfully informs us, having gotten rather badly mixed up with a dinosaur in the time machine. Panicked crowds scatter below as the creature looms over what appears to be a futuristic arrival sector, rendered in Brian Bolland's distinctively detailed linework. It's a wonderfully chaotic snapshot of the anarchic energy that made 2000 AD such a breath of fresh air in British comics of 1977.
