What you’re looking at
This page is primarily **advertisements** rather than political satire. The main illustration—labeled "Point Pleasant Land Co." with subtitle "After the Drawing, August 24th"—depicts a speculative real estate scheme as chaotic comedy. The cartoon shows multiple figures juggling or dropping buildings and property documents, with speech bubbles suggesting confusion and mismanagement. This satirizes the rampant land speculation and real estate fraud common in the 1870s Gilded Age. The scattered buildings, frantic poses, and characters' apparent distress mock investors and promoters making unrealistic promises about property developments. The "drawing" reference suggests a lottery or raffle scheme—a common fraudulent tactic for selling land. The surrounding advertisements (mineral water, coffee pots, binding services) are typical Puck revenue sources.

We would suggest to his Satanic majesty that kerosene has no equal as a fire-kindler.— Oil City Derrick. Point Preasant is one of the most charm- ing points on the New Jersey coast. It is situ- ated just below Long Branch, near Barnegat Bay, in the centre of a district famous for its facilities for fishing and hunting, and within easy reach of New York, by boat and rail. It is here that the well-known “ Resort House” is located—one of the best Summer Hotels in the country, lying close by the Squan River, in the midst of tastefully laid out grounds, of which a beautiful lake is one of the most nota- ble attractions, This fine piece of property, together with a number of lots on Beach and Ocean Avenues, with cottages upon them, is to be put up in the drawing of the Point Pleasant Land Co. as an inducement to purchasers of lots in that de- lightful neighborhood, ‘These lots are 50x125 and 50x 250 feet, and the price of shares is but $275. Each purchaser receives a lot and the chance of receiving one of the prizes mentioned above. ‘The terms of payment are exceptionally stallments, This is no chimerical gambling scheme, but a solid, safe and respectable busi- ness project, as all may satisfy themselves by | calling at the office of Mr. Duryee, 176 Broad- way, where photographs and views may be seen, A short strip of railroad from Squan to Whit- ings will be in operation before another season, making direct communication with Philadel- phia and the South and West—making it the nearest seaside resort to Philadelphia on the Jersey coast. We are assured that the 24th of August will be the last chance. There will be no post- ponement. ‘The President and Board of ‘I'rus- tees have determined that every purchaser shall have an equal chance, as they are men of pe- cuniary worth, and in the highest business and social standing in ‘Trenton, Only one-fourth of the number remain unsold. y—$100 down; balance by in- | APOLLINARIS NATURAL Mineral Water, @ The Queen of Table Wate HIGHLY EFFERVESCENT.
