This is a **humor column**, not a political cartoon. "Neighborhood News" collects gossipy, satirical local reports from American cities, written in folksy dialect. The satire targets: 1. **Indiana authors**: Repeatedly notes that Meredith Nicholson, George Ade, and Booth Tarkington are "lookin' fine"—mocking provincial pride in local literary figures. 2. **Prohibition era**: References "Sandy McDonald" liquor being seized, with humorous skepticism about the authorities' "examination" of labels—satirizing the absurdity of Prohibition enforcement. 3. **Herbert Hoover**: Multiple digs at the presidential candidate, including a joke about not wanting him to kiss a newborn, and mockery of citizens voting for him in a newspaper straw poll with "tongues hanging out"—suggesting desperate enthusiasm. 4. **Social pretension**: References to the Bohemian Grove and polo club activities lampoon upper-class leisure activities. The column's appeal lies in its casual, irreverent tone mocking celebrities, politicians, and local social hierarchies through exaggerated rural dialect.
