What you’re looking at
This page from *Life* magazine consists primarily of **society gossip and local news** organized by city (Boston, St. Louis, New York, Houston, Montreal). It's not a political cartoon page, but rather a "Neighborhood News" column—a popular *Life* feature mixing celebrity mentions with gentle satire of local social pretensions. The humor targets upper-class figures through: - **Backhanded compliments**: E.W. Preston hasn't gone five years without wearing a flower—suggesting affectation; Sherman Whipple now needs a second brief case (mock-celebration of prosperity). - **Social climbing**: Alvan T. Fuller (Massachusetts Governor and auto dealer) is buying oil paintings; people rushing to adopt summer fashions. - **Absurdist observations**: The Statue of Justice hasn't endorsed cigarettes; a financial genius belongs to the "4:30 Daylight Saving Poker Club." References like **Al Smith** (1920s Democratic politician) and **Senator Reed** (likely James Bayard Reed) ground this in early 1920s politics, though obliquely. The tone is affectionate mockery of leisure-class habits rather than sharp satire—typical of *Life*'s society column voice.
