She starts out with the swing of a saga and the vocabulary of a title- writer to tell about a commonplace in- cident in the life of a shop-girl, and in two minutes is down to the “I didn’t!” “You did!” school of dialogue where she is really at home and effective. Although it’s not going to make any difference in the avalanche of her royalties, I can’t resist telling her right here that she is her own worst enemy and is good enough to be better. Diana Warwick. Inside Information Percy Havcuton’s “Football and How to Watch It” (Marshall Jones) ought to bring relief to several dif- ferent types of football enthusiast. Most obvious, of course, is the young man who, for social reasons, finds him- self slated to take a beautiful girl to the Big Game with no way of explaining to her beforehand what a football is or how many men play on a team. A copy of the Haughton book, sent two weeks in advance of the chrysanthemums, would work wonders. The book is not too elementary, how- ever, to be of service to those who have watched football for many years but who are still a little in the dark as to what happens when the ball is snapped. Many an old grad, whose conversation is very sporting and technical, will be glad to glance through this book and learn a few things that he has been bluffing about ever since he was an un- dergraduate. Experts will be: interested in Coach Haughton’s treatise, because Coach Haughton is an expert himself, and they will be anxious to find something wrong. We doubt that they do.
