What you’re looking at
This page contains **editorial commentary and period advertising** rather than political cartoons. The main article critiques Herbert E. Miles's proposal (published in *North American Review*) to edit and reorganize the Bible, removing "outdated" sections. Life's editor argues against this revision, contending that the Bible's value lies not only in its comprehensible parts but also in passages whose significance people may only understand later through continued study. The piece defends the original assembly and editing of the Bible as superior to any contemporary revision attempt. The surrounding advertisements—for French perfume (Roger & Gallet), men's thermal underwear, vermouth, and a "nervousness cure"—are typical of the era's commercial content. A brief humor item about a hotel guest requesting Scotch whisky appears at page bottom, playing on the distinction between American and European hotel plans.

MILES, who has de- scribed himself as a retired busi- ness man, has come out in the North American Review for a recon: ’~action of the Bible in which parts shall be omitted and the remnants of it rear- ranged. He thinks the Bible is a great book but somewhat out of date; that it is not doing the good it might do, and if some competent hands took hold of it and cleared some of the junk out of it, a proper book might be made of it that no sensible person would object to. Mr. Miles has learned that half of the | people in the country do not go to | church. He thinks they ought to, and that if the Bible were trimmed up a bit and renovated, and preaching done to match, maybe they would. Mr. Miles is a funny man. His in- | tentions are obviously good, but his un- derstanding even more obviously lim- ited. There is no objection to his doing about the Bible what he wants to do— to rearrange what he understands and leave out what he does not understand. The trouble will be that when he has done it, he won’t be able to sell his product. There is more known and suspected about religion than Mr. Miles thinks. The great body of people who are interested in the Bible at all will know that the book as it is is vastly more valuable and useful than the book that Mr. Miles would produce. Some things were more familiar and better understood when the Bible was put to- gether than they are now. We know more about many things than men did 2,000 years ago, but some things, well known then, have been almost crowded out of knowledge, and are only now coming back. The Bible is valuable not only for those parts of it which peo- | ple like Mr. Miles understand, but also, and even more so, for what they don’t understand to-day, but may with good luck understand later if they keep on trying. The job of assembling and editing the Bible was remarkably well done. No group of contemporary men, such | as Mr. Miles suggests, seems fit to bet- ter it. E. S. M.
