What you’re looking at

This page contains three brief humorous anecdotes typical of Life's satirical style, plus period advertisements. **"Living Up to His Name"** mocks rural Southern dialect and appearance. A Northern tourist encounters a scraggly pig ("razorback") and asks a poor white farmer ("cracker") what it is. The farmer's reply—that the pig is "stropping himself" (sharpening himself) against the tree—plays on the animal's lean, bristly appearance and the farmer's colloquial speech. **The hospital anecdote** jokes about a man with epilepsy who pre-emptively informs doctors his condition is epilepsy, not appendicitis, having already had appendix removals. It satirizes both hypochondria and medical overtreatment. **"Rather Drafty"** repeats a Buffalo Bill anecdote about an English visitor blown from a wagon by Rocky Mountain wind, commenting dryly on American ventilation. It plays on English understatement and cultural shock. The page is primarily filled with period advertisements for Club Cocktails, Bon Bons Chocolates, and Maillard chocolates—typical luxury goods marketed in this era.

Living Up to His Name When the train stopped at an inland Virginia station the northern tourist sauntered out on the platform. Beneath a tall pine stood a lean animal with scraggy bristles.
