**"A Line on a Windy Wash Day"** (top left) is a humorous poem by Kate Masterson depicting laundry day mishaps—clothes flapping chaotically on a clothesline, with vivid descriptions of garments flying about ("pink pajamas," "violet hose," "thistle-down"). **The central cartoon** shows children playing in the street while an adult (labeled "Father Beilly") observes. The caption jokes that he's not their father—he's their rector with a wife and three children of his own, suggesting confusion about paternity or domestic arrangements. **"Sweethearts and Wives"** (bottom) features dancing couples in an energetic, carefree style, likely satirizing romantic entanglements or marital dynamics. **"Is Regeneration Coming?"** (right) is a serious editorial piece discussing criminal justice reform, proposing that convicted offenders receive education and rehabilitation rather than purely punitive sentences.

Kate Masterson. DWeELHEARTS, “HERE COMES FATHER REILLY.” “NAW, THAT'S OUR RECTOR. HE AIN'T NO PATHER; HE'S GOT A WIFE AND THREE KIDS.” Is Regeneration Coming > entirely new idea in the regula- AN tion of unruly persons has been advanced by a judge in Brooklyn, who recently sentenced an offender to four years in Sunday School, with instruc- tions that if the prisoner failed to attend regularly each Sunday he would be brought back and sent to jail. Great reforms, or great movements, AND WIVES have oftentimes originated, if not by accident, in a very incidental and in- conspicuous way. Maybe this new step originated by Judge Fawcett will lead to a wholesome movement in the fu- ture, which will go far toward regen- erating the human race. For example, if any of our police captains go wrong, why not sentence them to sit with Anthony Comstock for an hour every day? Even the prospect of such an ordeal as this would make any man hesitate long before entering upon a career of crime. How would it do, in the case of some incorrigible malefactor in high life, for example, who had been guilty of mulct- ing the government in a bond issue, to compel him to listen to the debates of Congress? This method might seem too drastic, hut we believe in severe punishment. Jt is the only thing that is going to keep us straight. In cases where a man commits a really great crime, he can be made to listen to the suffragettes. The mere announcement of law like this would go far toward regenerating society. comicbooks.com
